It is recommended that students complete Science 10 or equivalent with a good foundation in mathematics.

Overview : Chemistry 11 has been developed to promote the acquisition of knowledge and the learning of problem solving skills as related to core chemistry concepts. This course emphasizes the application of chemistry in everyday life, including skills required in the workplace, while promoting positive attitudes towards science.

Chemistry 11 is organized into five Units. Each Unit consists of several Lessons, and each Lesson has an associated Quiz. In addition, each Unit has a Lab Activity. Students are not required to perform the labs on their own, but rather are given sample lab data to manipulate and analyze. There are three tests, with no final exam.

Unit 1: The Nature of Matter

  • Lesson 1: Introduction to Chemistry and Lesson 2: Physical Properties & Changes of Substances  (Two Lessons completed for First Assignment: Quizzes 1 and 2)
  • Lab Activity #1
  • Lesson 3: Inorganic Nomenclature

Unit 2: Atoms & the Periodic Table

  • Lesson 4: Atomic Theory
  • Lesson 5: The Periodic Table
  • Lesson 6: Lewis Structures
  • Lab Activity #2

  • Test #1 (Covers Units 1-2)

 Unit 3: Stoichiometry

  • Lesson 7: The Mole Concept
  • Lesson 8: Percent Composition
  • Lab Activity #3
  • Lesson 9: Chemical Reactions
  • Lesson 10: Gravimetric Stoichiometry (Covers Units 1-2)

Unit 4: Solution Chemistry

  • Lesson 11: Chemical Bonding
  • Lesson 12: Solutions & Solubility
  • Lesson 13: Molar Concentration
  • Lesson 14: Solution Stoichiometry
  • Lab Activity #4

  • Test #2 (Covers Units 3-4)

 Unit 5: Organic Chemistry

  • Lesson 15: Alkanes
  • Lesson 16: Alkenes & Alkynes
  • Lesson 17: Complex Organic Compounds
  • Lesson 18: Polymers
  • Test #3 (covers the work of Unit 5)

The textbook required is:

  • Hebden: Chemistry 11 - A Workbook for Students (1998)
