Description: English 10 is a completely online course with the exception of the Play Romeo and Juliet, and the novel Animal Farm which come from the shipping department.
The course is divided into three units:
- Writing and Comprehension – Essay writing, composition, thesis development, editing.
- Romeo and Juliet – various aspects are covered – setting, plot, theme, character
- A Novel Study – this is Animal Farm unless students get approval for an optional novel of their choosing.
Themes /Topics/Skills Covered (based on Ministry IRPs) see Course Roadmap in D2L for details.
The essay work and elements build on one another so that by the end of the course a student will be very proficient in essay writing. Improvement in writing is guaranteed and feedback will be personalized and context based so students learn from their own style of writing. The teacher will work closely with and support the student throughout the course.
Assessment for this course is based on a combination of criterion-reference, final draft submissions, and rubrics that can also be used as checklists prior to submitting work. Students in English will have several chances to improve marks when revisions are provided and met.
10% requirement for the course comes from the First Assignment which is completed at registration time: Due to changes in government funding requirements for Distance Learning students, we have had to require students to complete an assignment worth 10% of the final course mark before they are considered enrolled, and their materials shipped out.
