Students in Kindergarten have access to a variety of mini-units based on various topics and that meet prescribed learning outcomes. Some ofthe topics include: “Who are You'?", “Outside Changes" and “Food!”
Students in Kindergarten will also begin to explore reading and writing concepts using programs such as Reading and Writing A-Z. They are introduced to mathematical concepts through hands on activities and engaging resources to be utilized at home. Children in Kindergarten are encouraged to "show what they know in a variety of ways". Some of the products include, Lapbooks, video, pictures, digital storytelling, or oral responses.
Using Elluminate (an online interactive classroom) as a forum, teachers create and present interactive sessions covering a variety of topics and subjects. Some topics have included Life Cycles, Senses, Mapping and Math concepts.
Interaction Classes (iCIass) are offered in the Comox Valley, Qualicum and Nanaimo. Dates, times, and availability of this option varies year to year so please Contact us for more information. iCIass provides a fantastic opportunity for students and their families to gather, connect and share.
iCIass days include individual, small-group. and large-group activities. The focus is on providing interaction for learners and to provide opportunities that are harder to do at home individually. These interaction days meet a variety of curricular requirements as indicated by the Support Teacher.
Community based guests and field trips are also a part of the Kindergarten program wherever possible.
Students participating in community based activities that wish to use some of their activities toward their program, negotiate with their teacher how to present their teaming for credit.
There are several yearly events at Navigate. Past events have included: Family Hornby Island Retreat, Terry Fox Day, and an end of year family style picnic.
In addition, Navigate offers a range of special events and “Out and About Days” in a variety of geographical areas.
