Navigate’s grade 8-9 courses follow the BC curriculum and are designed to take four to six months to complete on average (100-120 hours of learning).  Students registering for these courses in June and July should understand that these are not abbreviated “summer school” versions of the curriculum.

New for Grade 8-9 students! Maximize your choices at your local BC high school with
cross enrollment at Navigate.

Effective 2013/2014 school year, BC students in grades 8 and 9 can choose from a variety of academic courses which they can complete at their own pace while still receiving the support of BC certified teachers. Using convenient technologies such as video conferencing, students can choose to interact in a virtual classroom setting or complete the courses on their own. This allows students greater flexibility to access elective courses, balance their academic courses, or accelerate their progress toward graduation requirements. Navigate has been providing distributed learning to students for many years. As an established distance education school, we have streamlined course delivery methods in a way that produces positive results to more than 4000 students province wide.

How does cross enrollment for grades 8-9 work?

With cross enrollment, a student simply enrols in two schools at the same time, completing in-class studies in their current BC secondary school, and enrolling with Navigate for the courses they choose to take online.

What are the benefits of cross enrollment?

Here's an example: A student has been looking forward to taking a woodworking elective, however when they meet to plan their semester with their school counsellor, they learn that it's only offered at their secondary school at the same time as English 9, a course they're required to take. Cross enrollment allows the student to enrol with Navigate to complete English 9 as a distributed learning course, freeing up the time on the schedule to also take the wood working elective at their current school. The student is credited for both completed courses.

Cross enrollment provides helpful tools to school counsellors throughout BC to find creative solutions that motivate students. Families can choose a learning environment that supports their child’s needs and provides a positive peer experience. It’s our experience at Navigate that providing this flexibility motivates learners to take a keener interest in their education.

Students who utilize a cross enrollment option can also meet their goals faster by having the option of continuing their studies throughout the year, or by taking academic courses consecutively. For example, some students find that understanding the concepts in Math 9 course is easier when it's taken in the semester immediately following completion of Math 8, rather than waiting until the next school year.

Is cross enrollment available for high school students too?

Yes, students in grades 10-12 can also cross enrol to take one or more courses at Navigate while still attending the high school of their choice.
