Jesse Ruben Visits Navigate

January 30, 2013

Navigate had a very special guest visit our school. Jesse Ruben, a New York musician, flew to the Comox Valley and spent one week visiting and playing for Puntledge, Queneesh, Huband and Navigate. His song ‘I Can’ is the inspiration and theme song for the ‘We Can’ project started at Puntledge School. Jennifer Turner, the Vice Principal at Puntledge wrote to Jesse thanking him for his song and asked if he would be willing to visit the district he inspired. To her surprise he said yes!

Navigate had the honor of Jesse’s presence for one afternoon. He joined the staff for a potluck lunch, and then performed for the entire school in the gymnasium. The now legendary ‘I Can’ song was saved for last, and the students sang along with the energetic young artist. Jesse’s warm and genuine demeanor captured his audience immediately, not to mention the beautiful songs he played in the intimate school setting.

Following his performance, Jesse joined Lucy Slater and her class. The students performed two songs for Jesse, who was visibly thrilled! He spent some time sharing his journey with the students, some life experiences and feelings about being an independent artist. Jesse left the class with another beautiful and touching song called ‘Family’, moving many to tears.

Thank you to Jesse for taking the time to inspire, motivate and role model for our students. We were truly lucky to have met you and our hearts grew at least one size bigger that day.
