Matthias Smith, a grade six student in the FAE program, has exciting plans for Spring Break!
In November 2011, Matthias was scouted at a tournament in Victoria where he was playing with the local Atom A rep. hockey team. One of the coaches for the Canadian Explorers team approached Matthias’s dad after watching him play and invited him to try out for the team.
Matthias was one of six goaltenders selected from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan to try out for this Western Canada team. The try-out took place in Edmonton in August 2012 and included ten hours of on-ice evaluation during the 20 hour period that the players were there. After the try-out, Matthias and his family visited relatives in Lethbridge and then drove home never expecting to receive a ‘yes’ in the mail.
Matthias is thrilled to be a part of this team that will represent Canada in twenty games played in the following countries: Germany, Austria (in the Olympic arena in Innsbruck), Italy, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Matthias is looking forward to going to Europe for the first time and is very grateful to have this opportunity of a lifetime.
We wish Matthias and the team all the best!
