Parent presentation: High School, Sexual Health, and Family Values
A brief Q&A session will follow
The BC Ministry of Education Health and Career curriculum in grade 8-10 includes a section on healthy sexual decision-making. For the last four years Dr. Vanston has assisted in the delivery of this curriculum. She will address many of the more applied areas in class such as sexual consent and sexual assault law, sexually transmitted infections, birth control choices and healthy relationships, she will also spend some time discussing sexual abstinence, family and personal values, and how sexual coercion while illegal can be very subtle. A number of studies have shown parents are the primary (and most important) educators on the topic of sexual decision-making for their children; and family values about sex and sexuality matter tremendously to adolescent children. In light of this, we would like to personally invite you to attend the upcoming parent session where Dr. Vanston will outline the format and content of the school sessions at Isfeld, as well as invite you to discuss any questions or concerns you might have about the program. She speaks clearly and vociferously about sexual health and safety to our children, but the message is so much more powerful when it is also voiced at home and includes the values of the family.
The Sex Information and Education Council of Canada produced the document with funding from The Public Health Agency of Canada: http://www.sieccan.org/pdf/she_q&a_3rd.pdf which might also be helpful. Please contact Mr. Fussell at Isfeld Secondary if you have any questions.
