The Patch course is an independent study course combined with hands-on learning and all the necessary certifications you need to work in Canada's oil field. It's a two step process in which you will received 4 graduation credits for completing Patch 11 and 4 for completing Patch 12. By completing both courses you will have the required tickets, certification, and skill stet to find employment in Canada's oil patch.
Patch 11 (4 credits)
The Step Program @ Sandwick is 30-40 hours in total and offers on site training and interaction to cover topics including ladder safety, fall protection, and safety on the job site. WHMIS certification is a 3 hour course with no additional cost.
Job Readiness Program is 30 hours total and teaches students job search skills, conflict resolution skills, interpersonal and interview skills as well as resume and cover letter writing.
The Patch Learning Portfolio is 25-30 hours in total and is offered through the D2L platform at Navigate. Many formats and styles of learning are accepted including journal, video, photographs, certificates etc.
Patch 12 (4 credits)
The Step 2 Program @ Sandwick is 30-40 hours in total and also offers on site training and interaction to cover topics including professional interactions, ownership in the workplace, with an aspect of leadership.
St. John's Ambulance Training has four components to complete including H2SO4, Standard for Industry First Aid, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), and Construction Safety Training (CSTS). Each component is a separate 8 hour module that offers the following certifications:
- H2SO4 - (materials included) on site at St. John's Ambulance
- Standard Industry First Aid - (materials included) on site at St. John's Ambulance
- Transporation of Dangerous Goods - Online @ St. John's Amblulance, Comox Valley Campus
- Construction Safety Training - Online @ St. John's Ambulance, Comox Valley Campus
The Patch Learning Portfolio is 25-30 hours in total and is offered through the D2L platform at Navigate. Many formats and styles of learning are accepted including journal, video, photographs, certificates etc. and evaluated as follows: Learning contract 10%, Mentor Contacts (20%), Learning Log (10%), and 4 competency based reflections (Eportfolio format) 15% each.
Job Readiness Update is 10+ hours and helps students to update their cover letter, resume and job search to include new skills, certificates and courses gained through the Patch Program. Current job search is relevant to skill set and interest, and a mock interview process helps students gain confidence in their skills and prepare for employment.
